A painting called The Window Seat, painted by Emma Boyd in 1887
We present to you an overview of the artist of the painting:
Australian artist Emma Minnie Boyd (1858-1936) was born into the distinguished Beckett family and became known to family and friends as Minnie.
While it was rare for women in late 19th-century colonial Victoria to have an artistic education, Minnie's family nurtured her artistic talent and she studied at the National Gallery School in Melbourne.
Boyd exhibited her work publicly between 1874 and 1932. She exhibited with the Society of Victorian Artists, the International Centenary Exhibition 1888 (Melbourne), the Royal Academy of Arts (London), and in a joint show with her husband at Como House in Melbourne in 1902, among other venues. Over one hundred pounds of artwork was sold at the 1902 exhibition and commissions were given for further copies of the works sold. She had a talent for watercolor landscapes, although she painted in watercolor and oil, and a mixture of interiors, figures, portraits, still life studies and flowers. She is part of the Boyd Artistic Dynasty, an Australian artist family, that began with Emma and her husband Arthur and the works they created that influenced their children and grandchildren to pursue artistic careers.
