A painting called ( The Great Wave of Kanagawa ) painted by Hokusai in 1831

We present to you an overview of the artist of the painting:

Katsushika Hokusai 1760 - 1849, Japanese artist

He was active as a painter and printmaker, especially the art of Ukiyo-e, which is a Japanese graphic art movement that appeared at the beginning of the seventeenth century AD and is based on drawing (printing in relief). The drawings are first carved on wooden boards and then printed on paper.

Hokusai was instrumental in developing ukiyo-e from a portrait style that focused largely on women and actors to a much broader artistic style that focused on landscapes, plants, and animals.

His works are believed to have had a major influence on Vincent van Gogh and Claude Monet during the wave of Japanese influence, which spread throughout Europe in the late 19th century. Hokusai created thirty-six monumental views of Mount Fuji as a response to the boom in domestic travel in Japan and as part of his personal interest in Mount Fuji. It was this series, specifically, The Great Wave off Kanagawa and Fine Wind, Clear Morning, that secured his fame both in Japan and abroad.

Hokusai is best known for his ukiyo-e woodblock prints, but he worked in a variety of media including drawing and book illustration. Since he was a young child, he continued to work and improve his technique until his death, at the age of 88. In a long and successful career, Hokusai produced more than 30,000 paintings, drawings, woodblock prints, and pictures for picture books in all. Innovative in his compositions and exceptional in his painting style, Hokusai is one of the greatest masters in the history of art.
