We present to you an overview of the artist of the painting:
Jacob Rosedale 1628 - 1682 Dutch painter,
He is considered the preeminent landscape painter of the Dutch Golden Age, a period of great wealth and cultural achievement when Dutch painting became very popular.
Jacob Isakszoon van Roosdael was born in Haarlem into a family of painters, all landscape designers. The number of painters in the family, and multiple spellings of Van Ruisdael's name, have hampered attempts to document his life and the lineage of his works. The name Rosedale is associated with a now lost castle in the village of Blaricum. The village was home to Jacob's grandfather, a furniture maker.
A profound and multi-talented artist , Rosedale photographed a variety of landscapes. He painted Dutch rural scenes of wonderful quality for a young man. After a trip to Germany, his landscapes took on a different character. In his later works, he added city panoramas and seascapes to his usual repertoire. The sky often occupied two-thirds of the painting. In total, he produced more than 150 Scandinavian landscapes featuring waterfalls.
Rosedale moved to Amsterdam, which by then was a thriving city that potentially provided a larger market for his work.
Rosedale's works were in demand in the Dutch Republic during his lifetime. Today it is spread through private collections and galleries around the world; The National Gallery in London, the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam and the Hermitage Museum in Saint Petersburg house his largest collections. Rosedale influenced landscape painting traditions throughout the world.
