Jean Ignace Isidore Girard 1803 – 1847 19th century French painter and caricaturist
He became famous under the pseudonym Grandville and has been called "the first star of the French caricature era." Grandville's book illustrations have been described as incorporating "symbolic, dream-like, and asymmetrical elements, retaining a sense of social commentary." His vision sought the monster in all and varied the strangest and most damaging forms of alteration of the human form that imagination had ever produced. He was also called a "primitive surrealist."
Grandville was born into a family of artists and actors and received his first drawing instruction from his father. He moved to Paris around and began designing illustrations. His reputation was established when he published a collection of 70 lithographs entitled Les Métamorphoses du jour. During the Revolution of 1830 and the turbulent years that followed, he worked with Honoré Daumier and others producing provocative political cartoons. After passing strict censorship laws and threats from the police, Grandville turned to book illustration
