Pedro Alexandrino Borges 1856 - 1942, São Paulo, Brazil

Borges was a Brazilian painter and designer. Through his work he shaped the natural movement in Brazil. The majority of his works include oil paintings of landscapes, interiors and still lifes. Borges was born in São Paulo. He was a descendant of miners. He found access to art through his father, who played music at festivals and in churches. Even as a child, Borges wanted to be a painter. Already at the age of eleven he was helping a French designer with his work on the cathedral. This knowledge later allowed him to implement numerous designs in palaces and other churches in São Paulo and to attend drawing classes at the Academy of Arts.

Borges began his academic education at the Imperial Academy of Fine Arts in Rio de Janeiro. He received a scholarship from Sao Paulo State. But he did not complete his studies. Although awards were given for his works, they were not financially successful. After his marriage, he lived with his wife in a sparsely furnished room. Neither of them can afford a bed. He earns some money as a teacher at an arts and crafts school in São Paulo. When his wife died of typhus. Borges threw himself into his work and in 1894 received an award for one of his works. And opened a successful studio.

He then traveled to Paris with his second wife. There he met many artists and through them he discovered his passion for still life. This brings him an invitation from Baron von Rothschild to the United States. Returning to Brazil, he held a solo exhibition with 110 paintings, 84 of which still exist.

He wanted to return to Paris, but he did not have the money to do so. Only after a few successes in his homeland was he able to realize his dream. He returned to Paris and stayed there. He loved the city and called it the “City of Culture.”

In the 1920s, the Academy of Fine Arts of Genoa awarded Borges a prize for his work. He had great resonance in Brazil and his works became more popular. He won another award in Europe. The Italian government awarded him the title of Commander of the Crown of Italy. At the age of 85, Borges died from complications of influenza. Classes at the School of Fine Arts were suspended.
