A painting called ( Flower Still Life on a Marble Ledge ) painted by Jean-François Van Dael in 1800

We present to you an overview of the artist of the painting:

Jean Frans van Dael or Jean François van Dael 1764 – 1840 French painter and lithographer

He specialized in still lifes of flowers and fruits. He had a successful career in Paris where his patrons were from Imperial France. His work stands in the Flemish and Dutch painting tradition of flower painting with sober composition and attention to detail to which he added a French-inspired decorative effect.

Jan Frans van Dael was born in Antwerp, the son of a carpenter. He studied architectural drawing at the Antwerp Academy. He received the first awards of the Academy of Architecture

He traveled to Paris in 1786 where he stayed in the artists' residences in the Louvre near the artists Piat Joseph Sauvage and Gerard van Spaendonck en Pierre-Joseph Redouté. He worked as a state-protected artist in a studio at the Sorbonne University.

He was originally active as a decorator and worked on projects on the palaces of St. Cloud, Bellevue and Chantilly. His focus became painting. Under Van Spendonk's influence he turned to painting flowers.

He regularly presented his works to the Paris Salon between 1793 and 1833 as well as to salons in different countries. Proof of his success are the numerous commissions he received from Empress Josephine (who owned five of his works) and Marie-Louise Bonaparte, as well as King Louis XVIII and Charles X. Van Dael was a member of the Antwerp and Amsterdam academies.
